Do accents really matter in Turkish? Yes, accents are very important in Turkish. While some words are written the same regardless of whether they have an accent or special character, most words are not.
For example, the Turkish word for "book" can be written either "kitap" or "kıtap". The first version, "kitap", is only used when it appears at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. The second version, with the accent, "kıtap", would be used when the word is at the end of the sentence. Not using the correct accent or character can completely change the meaning of a word.
